Virtual Assistants – Which Niche? Stitch? Switch? Cooks in the Kitch!

by JudyAnn Lorenz Certified Internet Marketing VA on February 7, 2009

Selecting a niche to work in..a specialty that helps you recognize your target market can make your business in whatever field come together in a sensible fashion.  Taking the time to Stitch your niche picture doesn’t have to be torturous.

When you are trying to figure out what your niche IS, there are several things you can do that will help.

One thing I appreciated was a recommended book, NICHECRAFT by Dr. Lynda Falkenstein.    You will find information about this book in the Getting Started Section of the Red Leaf Shoppe at the link.

The book uses a training format with exercises for you to use when deciding what you are

  • Good at
  • Like doing
  • Have a market for

Aptitude for your career of choice is a big help, although anything can be learned.   So, if you are drawn to a certain niche, don’t let lack of experience stop you.  Lack of experience may help!

Your perfect niche will be more perfect if you like what you are working with.

The most perfect niche needs to have someone who will be the target market.  Your niche must fill a need with a client or customer or you’re out of business before you begin!

Another resource that can help you identify your niche lies in groups and forums for your chosen field.  In this blog, I’m largely writing to virtual professionals.  Networking with other virtual professionals online or at meet-ups in your community help you identify your strengths, interests and the demand for your choice.  Online, I recommend VAnetworking.com as a networking resource for virtual assistants.  There are two ‘sides’ to VAnetworking.com.  One side is great for investigating your choices, learning more about a virtual business and early networking.  There is no charge for this part of the forum, yet you can participate in seminars or access material to download.  You can ask questions of other virtual professionals, read about their experiences and get insight about niches that you are considering.

On the paid side of VAnetworking.com  – VAinsiders,  there are additional options that are exclusive to members.

As you research and seek your special niche, remember real life niches are not little nooks carved out of stone!  You can SWITCH your niche, your target market and your business direction.  You will, as a savvy business person, be watching the business climate at all times.  You will be ready to move away from a sagging niche or swing over to a hot new thing to take a little cream as you go by.

Read, network, research and follow your heart toward your special focus for your business.  Brain storm with others.  Mind Map yourself.  But, be the head cook in your kitch!
