“I vant to be alone!” | Solitary Networker? Can that be?

by JudyAnn on February 24, 2010

That’s okay, honey. One of the things I like best about working virtually is the opportunity for absolute solitude. I can have only the hum of my computers and my brain going along while I concentrate on the project at hand. The TV is never on during the day; frequently the radio is forgotten. Somedays I indulge in Pandora radio, but only in the afternoon. I want solitude and quiet.

Just a short while ago, we were in tall kaka because if we wanted to network , we had to give some face time. We had to go to meetings and be shoulder to shoulder till we were driven CraZy. Social Media was made for folks like us.

So, give up and BLOG, baby. Hop over to TWITTER where the party runs 25/8 (If you disagree with my fraction, you’ve not been to Twitter.) Facebook is another networking free-for-all that will let you play in solitude while you achieve the networking that you know is essential to your success.

Other benefits of this ‘solitary’ networking include being able to network in your jammies or concentrate on your projects while checking on the networking party. You can be in a webinar and play computer games when it get boring but still get the point.

It isn’t often that you can joyously be granted something that you want. No matter how much you needed to have quiet and solitude to be able to concentrate, you had to give it up for the necessary networking.

We went to those get-togethers in a BAD mood. We were there to get a taste of blood, grab some business cards and get out as fast as we could Networking got a bad name because too many solitary people were trying to milk it for business. Our phony intent was shining bright.

Now, in the 21st Century, we can work/play at Facebook, Twitter and specialty forums. We can connect in a professional network at LInkedIn. In some ways, when we were physically networking, we were probably alone more than now. We are online with our high speed broadband from dawn till dark; all day every day and then some. The truths and facts of solitude in different times and mediums are not always equal.

Truth and fact are also too heavy for me tonight. I love working in solitude and I love working with social media. That is enough for me today. If this is alone, then ” I vant to be alone.”  Want to join my party?

Hi Judy,
Great post. This quote is so true and probably the reason I’m feeling so tired right now: “We are online with our high speed broadband from dawn till dark; all day every day and then some. ”

I love social networking but sometimes I think it’s good to have total solitude (and silence) with no computer, no iPhones, no electronics and that is not an easy thing to do these days.

Here’s to networking in your PJs! Good night!

Solitary Networking is a pretty cool thing though!
